BRIGANDINE ABYSS Base Building

Upgrade a core, garrison for Invasion, and stop painting empty keeps.

Base Building

Bases in BRIGANDINE ABYSS are not a separate city-builder. They are the Organization-Phase economy that decides whether your three Invasion squads have money, materials, quests, and a home tile when a rival declares war. You upgrade with money and materials each season. Ranks go up to three and change which quests and outputs that keep can run. That is the whole tree. There are no tax-office minigames and no invented barracks tech.

This page is priority, garrison, and the season-lock on troop movement. Pair it with Quests and Training (leaders on quests cannot defend) and Getting Started (three squads is the hard cap that makes greedy expansion fail). Nation starting positions sit under Factions.

What a keep actually does

A controlled castle is a staging hex on the continent map, a quest board, a recruitment and monster-buying hook, and a place that must be held during Invasion. RPGamer’s launch coverage is the clean version: strongholds rank up with building materials; each rank adds options for equipment or materials; conquered nations can yield extra knights. Niffrom’s Market still sits in Organization as the buy screen once you have unlocked stock.

You do not need a unique building in every slot. You need ranks on the keeps that feed your three squads, and you need someone home. An unranked hamlet you cannot garrison is worse than a missing hamlet. NPC factions will declare. Invasion does not care that you liked the flag.

Upgrade priority (launch-week, any nation)

Season 1–4: the home stack. Put money and materials into the starting castle and the first keep you can actually hold. Unlock the local quest tier that drops materials and the first class-change items. Do not rank a distant prize castle you captured with a mercenary and then abandoned.

Until you have three real squads: output over map paint. Command Points and named leaders matter more than a pretty border. A second and third squad with monsters will win more Invasions than a fourth empty keep. Monster costs and CP live on Monster Summoning.

Once the core is ranked: the chokepoint, not the coast. Upgrade the castle that neighbors the land you are allowed to attack. Story Mode locks some nations; ranking a border you cannot cross is a museum. Upgrade the keep that will be declared on, because that is where you will need a garrison and a defensive hex map you already understand.

Late: stop. Every extra castle is another Invasion you might have to fight in the same season. Reviews called Story Mode repetitive partly because wide empires generate four or five hex battles with the same win conditions. A tight, ranked core plus three squads is how you keep Organization under an hour and still make Event Battle dates.

Garrison for Invasion defense

When you are invaded, you defend that keep’s hex map. If no leader is assigned there, you are volunteering the tile. The Attack Phase is when declarations lock. The Organization Phase is when you still could have parked a squad.

Defensive Invasions are not a mirror of attacks. RPG Site noted the attacker can win by breaching a last line you do not get as a reverse win condition, and that holding for a turn count (commonly discussed as twelve turns) can be the defender’s out. That only works if someone showed up. A mercenary squad is a legal garrison. A story knight on a ten-season training tick in another region is not.

Do not confuse “I have twenty named characters” with “I can defend twenty castles.” You deploy three squads per fight. You cannot be in four keeps at once. The garrison question is always: which three fights am I willing to take this season, and which keeps am I willing to lose?

Organization movement is a season lock

Troops you move during Organization are not available later in the same season at the castle they left. This is the rule that punishes clever-looking logistics. If you march your best three squads to the offensive border in Organization, the home keep is empty when a backline rival declares in Attack. You will not rewind the march. You will Invasion with what you staged.

Plan the season as a set of commitments:

  1. Who is questing (and therefore absent from every fight).
  2. Who is training (same).
  3. Who is staged at which keep for defense.
  4. Who is staged for the invasion you intend to declare.

If those four lists are the same three leaders, you have already lost a keep. Hire mercenaries so the lists can differ. Mercenaries perish forever, which is painful in combat and acceptable on a quest or a sacrificial garrison. Story leaders should be in the fights that can game-over you.

Do not spread too thin

The campaign wants you to eat the map. The systems want three squads. Those two desires fight. A useful test: if you cannot name which leader would Invasion-defend a castle, do not capture it yet—or capture it only if you are ready to lose it as a buffer.

Wide maps also make Event Battles feel disconnected. RPGFan’s review described owning half the continent while the story still treated the cast as a ragtag band. Mechanically, a wide empire is just more identical Invasions before the next timed fight. Rank a core. Quest from ranked keeps. Invade along open borders. Leave locked nations alone until Story Campaigns say the gate is up.

Combat still uses the keep you staged

Battlefield tactics—leader hunts, Rally, height—are on Combat Tips. Base building only decides whether you arrived with three squads and a ranked shop. If Invasion feels like a slog, check the map width before you blame your class tree. A smaller country with better ranks and a Lizard Rally battery will outlast a painted continent with empty keeps.

Retail launch does not add a hidden fortress DLC. What you see in Organization is the system. Watch official channels if Saito ships a feedback patch; do not wait on invented September balance notes before you upgrade the home castle.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about BRIGANDINE ABYSS.

How do I upgrade a base?

Spend money and materials during the Organization Phase each season. Ranks (up to three) unlock better local quests and outputs. There is no separate building minigame beyond that spend.

Why did I lose a castle I just captured?

You deploy three squads. If nobody was staged there after Organization movement, Invasion has no garrison. Troops moved away from a keep are gone for the rest of that season.

Should I capture every neighboring region?

No. Empty keeps are Invasion invitations. Upgrade a core you can defend, respect Story Mode locked borders, and treat extra land as a liability until you have mercenary garrisons.

Do quests count as leaving a keep unguarded?

Yes. A leader on a quest cannot defend. Park mercenaries on fetches and keep story knights at the castles you are not willing to lose.
