Beginner Tips and Tricks

BRIGANDINE ABYSS looks like Fire Emblem and plays like a war sim. The first ten hours will feel slow if you came in expecting Fire Emblem’s pacing. The first ten hours will feel generous if you came in expecting the older Brigandine games’ classic tension. This page is the launch-week beginner tips list — the habits that survive the first Event Battle, the mistakes that cost campaigns, and where to go when the rules get fuzzy. None of this is a substitute for the deeper system pages; it is a checklist you can run before you unpause season one.

The game launched on PC on August 26, 2026, and on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on August 27, 2026. Standard price is $49.99. There is no multiplayer. Adglobe developed it; Happinet publishes in Japan, NIS America publishes in the West.

For the loop itself, use How to Play. For the demo, use Editions & Demo. For the first campaign pick, use Best Faction. For systems primers, use the Rally System and Combat Tips pages.

Tip 1 — Play Gran Dragnica or Scarlet Will first

The Steam demo (May 25, 2026) and the console demo (July 30, 2026) shipped Gran Dragnica and Scarlet Will. Those two campaigns were the demo onboarding path. Pick one of them as your first full-game run. The other five Story Mode nations are available from the start, but the demo’s two nations have the cleanest opening hours. The Faction Tier List ranks the other four for when you replay.

Tip 2 — Three squads, three castles, three fights per season

You may field up to three leader squads in any Invasion. Each leader spends Command Points on up to five monsters. Total deployable squads is therefore the same on attack and on defense. Plan around that ceiling, not around the number of named characters you own. NPC nations train in the background and will declare on empty keeps. Three squads, three castles, three fights per season is the realistic budget. The Base Building page covers the upgrade priority that keeps this budget honest.

Tip 3 — Mercenaries are quest fodder, not main characters

Mercenary knights cost money to hire. When they fall in combat, they are gone forever. Story-relevant knights come back. That split is the entire Organization Phase economy. Park mercenaries on quests, training, and sacrificial garrisons. Park named leaders on Invasion and Event Battle defense. The Quests and Training page covers the operational version of this rule.

Tip 4 — Questing locks a leader out of combat that season

A leader on a quest cannot defend or join an Invasion that season. That is the rule that punishes clever-looking logistics. Sending your best three named officers to fetch ore leaves your castles empty when a rival declares in the Attack Phase. Use mercenaries on the long fetches. The How to Play page repeats this in the season loop.

Tip 5 — Class change at level 10, then again at 20 with an item

Every knight and every monster class-changes at level 10. Most take a second class-change at level 20, and that gate usually needs a class-change item from quests or training-style expeditions. Faction leaders can class-change without the item. NPC nations train in the background and are not waiting on your quest log. Falling behind on items is how a story special against six enemy squads starts to feel unfair. The Class System page is the rules primer. The Stats page explains what is actually documented about stat math.

Tip 6 — Monster promotions raise Command Point cost

When a monster class-changes, its Command Point cost goes up. A leader who comfortably fielded five monsters in season five may have to cut the squad to stay legal in season twelve. Plan promotions during Organization, not on the deployment screen. The Monster Summoning page is the practical version of this rule. The Best Monsters page ranks creature types by job.

Tip 7 — Height matters more than you think

BRIGANDINE ABYSS is the first entry in the series with vertical terrain that meaningfully changes range and damage. Higher elevation improves hit chance and damage. Flying units ignore some of those restrictions. Put fliers and ranged units on the high hex. Do not park three squads on the same contour line so a single area skill paints all of them. The Combat Tips page is the full hex checklist.

Tip 8 — Hunt the leader, end the squad

When a leader is defeated, the rest of that squad retreats. That is the fastest way to win an Invasion on either side of the war. The AI is bad at hiding its own leaders. Park meat in front of your own leader and focus the enemy commander when you invade. The Combat Tips page covers the leader-hunt in detail.

Tip 9 — Rally is a loadout, not a buff

Rally absorbs one monster and inherits its passive. Lizard Rally can grant a second action. Dismiss returns the monster. If the leader dies while a monster is rallied, that monster is at risk with the squad. Do not Rally your unique flier or your only dragon into a leader standing on the front hex. Read the Rally System page before you treat every lizard as an automatic pick.

Tip 10 — Accuracy is janky; play around it

Multiple launch reviewers flagged physical accuracy as genuinely swingy. 75 percent swings miss in clumps. Hard difficulty often looks like extra enemy defense rather than smarter AI. Pad accuracy with height, encirclement, and magic answers. Do not stake an Event Battle on a single physical swing. The Combat Tips page covers the workarounds.

Tip 11 — Event Battles can end your campaign

Story Mode Event Battles fire on a calendar. They can pull any of your squads regardless of where they stand on the world map. Lose one and the campaign is over. Keep story leaders off optional quests as the date approaches. Stage three squads at a central keep before the season arrives. The Campaign Walkthrough page and the Story: Gran Dragnica / Story: Scarlet Will pages all repeat this in their seasonal plan sections.

Tip 12 — Do not attack locked nations

Story Mode locks some rival nations until events fire. The map is not lying, and the Attack menu is not broken. Declaring on a locked border wastes the Attack Phase. Re-read the Attack Phase and try a different border. The Story Campaigns page covers the gates in plot order.

Tip 13 — The demo does not transfer

The Steam demo and the console demo are the first two seasons of Gran Dragnica and Scarlet Will. Demo saves do not transfer to the full game. Use the demo to learn the loop, then start a new campaign on Standard. There is no penalty for having played the demo. The Editions & Demo page repeats this in plain language.

Tip 14 — Switch 2 is locked at 30 FPS by design

If you dock a Switch 2 and expect the same frame-rate options as PC, you will be disappointed. The console target is 30 FPS for stability. Plan around the camera pacing rather than waiting for a patch. The Controls page covers the platform facts.

Tip 15 — Do not spread too thin

The campaign wants you to eat the map. The systems want three squads. Those two desires fight. Upgrade a core of castles that feed your three squads. Capture only what you can garrison. Reviews that bounced off Story Mode called this exact behavior out as the main grind. The Base Building page is the upgrade-priority primer.
